Yay! Shawn has one last final tomorrow and then its off to Christmas break for some much needed relaxation! I have totally enjoyed not having any finals this year and doing rotations instead! We are excited for upcoming Christmas festivities and Shawn's sister getting married! I have the Christmas shopping done earlier than usual this year! Wahoo!

A Temple Close By

We were very excited at the announcement of the Fort Collins, CO temple today by President Monson! This means that a temple will only be 1 hour away instead of 2.5. That will be so nice! Hopefully we will still live here by the time it gets built; however it will be fun to see the stages of it as it comes along! Are you excited or what?

A Record for Cold

At least for me anyways....it is -32 degrees outside and with the wind chill it 'feels like' -51! Brrrr.....and they don't ever cancel school here, so I have to go trek across campus! Hopefully I will still have my fingers and toes!

Shawn's Fantastic News

I feel like we have lots to be grateful for right now and lots of good news. Shawn will be graduating here in May with his bachelors. And then he has been accepted to Law School so he will be starting that in the fall! Yay, Shawn! I am on my last semester of schooling before I start a year of rotations. I am getting very excited and looking forward to not having tests each week...what do I do with myself?? I find myself daydreaming about what life will be like with no school, which is bad since I need to be studying. EEEKK....however, with it being negative 6 outside I don't have any desire to go outside, so that helps me refocus on my studies.

Winter Break

We have been having a very nice break so far. We got to go up to Worland for a while and visit Shawn's parents. The house was pretty quiet since no one else was able to make it up there at the same time, but we enjoyed the visit nonetheless. Then we headed to Casper for Christmas. I was chairman of the Iron Chef Family Edition and Shawn was a cook. It was a lot of fun! Christmas was great as always, we received many wonderful gifts and played lots of games. Yesterday, Shawn and I had our 3rd anniversary! What an amazing blessing I have to have such a great husband (right now he is making me some pizza...YUM!) Anyway, we are looking forward to the new year and I will post some stuff from Iron Chef soon!

Let It Snow!

So it is officially winter here in Laramie. We have gotten quite a few inches this week. I have really enjoyed it because it isn't below zero yet and it isn't blizzarding (that means we haven't had tons of wind). It is really beautiful when the snow falls straight down instead of sideways! Hooray for snow!
I have started to listen to Christmas music and have tried to put up Christmas decorations but Shawn won't let me. He says I have to wait until Thanksgiving....that's just silly!
Meanwhile, I am still studying my college life away and Shawn is too (most the time). Shawn is graduating in May so he is speedily on his way to his bachelors. I am still looking at a couple years of school but I tell myself that everyday I am getting closer...right? One good thing about going to school for forever is that I still can go to basketball games. Shawn and I have been able to attend a couple lately and have had a good time!
Last, but certainly not least, my sister, Alicia is one of four women that are putting together the Wyoming Woman Magazine. It is a pretty cool magazine for the women that live in WY (because we all know it is so different here than other places). They do four issues a year and just launched their first ever issue. It is pretty cool because they put in stories of WY women, recipes, and some funny stuff. This magazine really hits home for me. I was born in Utah and moved to Wyoming when I was still a kid. While I miss certain things about Utah (peach tree, and being able to grow other plants, predictable weather), Wyoming has captured my heart. This state is my home now and it is where I want to stay. I must say I am grateful to these four women for trying to connect the women of Wyoming! Anyway, if you are interested check out the website. Wyoming Woman Magazine

Homeade Cottage Cheese

As most of you probably know, I really like cottage cheese. So one day, Shawn was looking up how to make things. I think it was sour cream, because I wanted to make a ranch dip and didn't have any sour cream (and it was Sunday so of course we couldn't go pick some up). Anyway, we didn't ever make sour cream, but Shawn saw a recipe for cottage cheese and decided he really wanted to make some. It is actually pretty good. It doesn't taste like store bought, but it is still pretty good. The first day it was really rich and you could only eat a little of it. Today, it isn't as rich and is still really good. It sort of tastes like mozzarella cheese. Shawn thought it might be really tasty to put in lasagna.

Salt Lake City

Last weekend we had the opportunity to go down to Salt Lake City and attend my cousin Stephanie's wedding in the Salt Lake Temple. We are so excited for you! You look so beautiful! And Aaron seems like a great guy! Congrats!

We also had the opportunity to attend the Salt Lake Temple for both Shawn and my first time. It was a pretty neat experience! I would highly recommend it if you haven't been through Salt Lake before. The temple is beautiful.

School's In Again

Well, here we are at the start of another semester...and what I hope has been the LAST FIRST day of school for me! It is all continuous for the next 2 years. This semester I am taking Therapeutics, Pharmacy Law, Health Literacy, Physical Assessment in the Evaluation of Drug Therapy, and Toxicology (where we learn about poisoning...AWESOME!)
Shawn is taking an investment class, database management class, computer applications class, and marketing management...oh and PE...sounds fun huh?
Well, our busyness level has increased immensely yet again but there is an end in sight. Shawn is hoping to graduate in May! Yay!
Well, I suppose I should be studying or something....

Get Out and VOTE!

Tomorrow (Tuesday 17, 2010) is the official voting day for the primary elections. I have never realized before just how important the primary election can be. A candidate is only backed by their party if they win the primaries. If they win the primary, the candidates have more access to funding by their party, increased awareness of voters, and makes it a TON more likely that they have a chance in the general elections in November. So if there is a candidate you are rallying for, they need your help in the primary election! Get out and VOTE!

Frontier Days

Yesterday Shawn and I went to Cheyenne Frontier Days and went to the rodeo. There was lots of bull-riding and tons of other events. They only had one event for the girls though and that was the barrel racing. All in all it was a pretty good show. We were lucky and picked the shady side to sit on. The other side was sitting in the sun all day and even though the people had misters above their heads, they still looked really warm and quite miserable! On our way in, we heard a lady talking on her phone and she said that she was in Colorado and it took her two days to get here...uh...lady...I know you're not from around here but Cheyenne is NOT in Colorado!
After the rodeo we walked around the carnival and all the booths that were set up. I tried on a hairpiece that made my hair about a foot longer! That was interesting, it kinda looked like a had a weird mullet going on.
Tomorrow we want to go and see the Air Force Thunderbirds Show, we saw a few of them fly around while we were down there and I bet the show will be pretty cool!

Thankful Thursday in the Kitchen

I spent a lot of time in the kitchen today preparing food because we fed the missionaries. While there, I decided that there were many things in my kitchen to be thankful for, so I thought I would share some...

1. A rice cooker - this is probably one of my favorites. Shawn got this for me for Christmas, probably because we hadn't had rice for the last two years because I can never get it to cook right. Now, I just dump in the rice, the water, push the one and only button and completely forget about it until I put it on the table to eat...and it is perfect every time!

2. Rubbermaid - We decided to buy this nice set of rubbermaid tupperware, so far I LOVE them. There are 3 lid sizes that match up to a whole bunch of different size containers. The lids all snap together for easy storage and easy finding. The tupperware stacks nicely and the lids snap on the bottom...So I have two very organized stacks of tupperware in my cupboard with the lids attached. Just pull out the size I want, grab the attached lid and I'm off...thus effectively eliminating 5 minutes of digging around to find the lid that fits the container that I want! Hooray! I even got the ones with pink lids...

3. Dishwashers-I have run mine twice today from so much baking...so thankful I am not hand-washing anymore.

4. Measuring cups with 2/3 and 3/4 size cups in them...love them....definitely speeds up the measuring process when you don't have to fill your cup multiple times. I looked for these the whole first two years of our marriage and finally found them, so of course I had to buy them. They are quite handy.

5. Recipe Cards - I know this doesn't sound like much, but for our wedding we got a cute set of recipe cards...and I just think they're so cute! (Yes, I realize it sounds strange when I say a recipe card is cute...) Anyway I was able to pull out all my bread recipes and compare them side by side to see which one I wanted to make today.

6. Disposal - probably the thing we all take for granted because everyone has one...however, I like mine. I can just put yucky food down there and it saves from going into the garbage and stinking up the house. (Shawn is probably also thankful because that means he doesn't have to take out the garbage as often)

What's Up With Us

Last week Shawn and I were able to bring home the table that we refinished (with Papa's help of course!) and I am just doing a few finishing touches but it looks really nice. Now I just need to finish up the chairs and the chair covers but I am excited for this huge project to be done!
This week we went exploring. We explored Curt Gowdy State Park - all three lakes! Surprisingly, they don't allow you to swim in these lakes...why is that? Anyway, we hung out there for a day and than we went and explored Centennial and the lakes above there with Amanda and Jason. Jason was showing us how to fish and I caught the only catch of the day. It was just a little guy though I won't lie! There is so much snow up there! People were SKIING....in JUNE! It wasn't that cold though, but the lake we wanted to go to we couldn't get to because the road was blocked by snow drifts. Crazy! At the highest point there the GPS said the elevation was 10,900 feet. It is actually pretty cool to see, the highest points of the mountains don't have any trees because they are so high!
Last weekend we went to Utah for the family reunion. My cousin left on her mission to Norway. We are super excited for her and the choices that she has made in her life! Whit you're awesome!
I have been trying to plan my RS lesson today. Usually I teach out of the Gospel Principles Manual but I switched with someone else so now I am teaching a general conference talk. I must admit that it has been challenging because its different than what I'm used to. Hopefully it will turn out alright though. Well that's what we've been up to.

School's Out

After quite a full semester school is finally out! I took my last test yesterday and finished up a group project this morning. I have successfully passed my big test that covered information from the last 3 semesters! Hooray! And there is no better way to start my summer off than with a nice morning snow shower! It has not yet warmed up here at all. I actually bought some capri pants about a month ago while we were visiting Fort Collins and have not yet been able to wear them! I am hoping to wear them soon. The cashier at Wal-Mart so graciously told me that it is always cold in Laramie until all the students leave and then it warms up. Which I am not sure I believe due to the fact that she also told me to put Vicks on my feet to help my cough go away. (For the record...I did try it and found that it works no better than putting Vicks on my throat where the Vicks is supposed to go...)
Shawn has been done since Monday. He has been such a sweetheart and supported me as I have studied hard with some people from my class all week. He even brought us some strawberries to snack on while we studied one day. He is so thoughtful! He has one more year left before getting his bachelor's degree! I am so proud of him! This month will be full of lots of fun stuff. We are excited to see our new niece, and attend Dean and Leah's wedding.

Award Dinners

Shawn received a scholarship this year and is invited to the college of business (COB) dinner on Fri April 30th to receive recognition for this. He has also been inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma which is a COB club recognition thing. He was inducted this year as a Junior which is quite impressive because they only take the top 5% of the junior class! Way to go Shawn! They will also be celebrating that right before the COB dinner.
I have been awarded a scholarship for next year and must go to the pharmacy dinner on Sat May 1st in order to receive that. Hooray for free money! Every little bit helps!
You are all invited to come and go with us to these events; however, since we have finals first thing Monday morning we may not be much for company! (Who plans celebration dinners right before finals??)

Birthdays, Babies, and Bingo

Last Wednesday was Shawn's birthday. We had fun celebrating it. We tried out a little Chinese place for dinner. We were the only people in the restaurant and the same guy was our waiter, cook, and cashier and presumably the owner. The food was actually quite good and I am surprised the place always seems so empty. I also made him try store bought ice cream cake since he hadn't ever had it and he likes ice cream...I did let him pick out which one he wanted. This is always a great day for me because if he hadn't been born then he wouldn't be here to marry me! I am so glad he was! Happy Birthday Shawn!
Last Thursday Alicia had her baby so we now have 9 nieces and 1 nephew. The baby's name is Aubrey Cynthia and she has red hair! I can't wait to go see her!
Last weekend we went to play bingo at the school. Ever since I won a Nintendo DS there, we have been faithful bingo goers each semester. Shawn won a pretty nice water bottle this time, but I have been on a major losing streak. I only needed one more number in order to win a flat screen TV...but someone else got to it before me!

The Regency Ball

While visiting Casper earlier this year my parents talked Shawn and I into attending a dance practice. We learned fun dances such as the Virginia Reel and many others. We then went back a few weeks later for the ball itself. It was quite fun! We even got Shawn a hat like Neil on White Collar. He looks very good in it!

Mom really looks like the bell of the ball here. She hand-made her pretty purple dress! Dad got a nice looking tux complete with cuff-links that Grandpa Homer made.

Christmas Time with Friends

Christmas for this year was in Worland. While there, we got to hang out with some of Shawn's friends. I got to try hockey on ice for the first time. It turns out I am quite horrible at it and was sore for a long time afterward. Shawn is pretty good though and it was fun to watch him. He wasn't afraid to fall (daredevil)! I am scared to death of falling and cracking my head open on the ice! Maybe thats because I have seen it happen?? Anyway, we also got to hangout for a delicious breakfast the next morning at the Varney house.

Interesting Medicine Stuff

I recently got an email from the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database which is a database that evaluates and gathers information on natural medicines. It provides info on many natural and herbal medicines that are out there, details on how well these medicines work, including side effects and even tells how reliable the information is depending on where the source came from. This database is well-renowned in the medical world and has tons of info. Anyway, this is just an update they sent me that I thought some of you may be interested in.

• Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is getting more attention as a potential treatment for hypertension(high blood pressure). New clinical research shows that drinking a specific hibiscus tea (Celestial Seasonings) three times daily for 6 weeks significantly lowers blood pressure by about 7 mmHg in patients with pre-hypertension or mild hypertension. This is promising, but preliminary. More studies need to be done, this may be helpful but as of yet should not be a substitute for conventional methods.

• St. John's wort has now been linked to an increased risk of cataracts in new research. There have been concerns for years that St. John's wort might increase cataract risk. The hypericin constituent of St. John's wort is photoactive. In the presence of light, hypericin might damage lens proteins and precipitate cataracts. A new population study shows that taking St. John's wort is associated with risk of developing cataracts. People who spend a significant amount of time in the sun should avoid taking St. John's wort.

L-methylfolate is being promoted by some manufacturers as a more active form of folic acid. L-methylfolate is in many prenatal vitamins such as Optinate, Neevo DHA, Prenate Elite; and regular vitamin supplements including Optimized Folate, MegaFolinic, and others. It's also being used in medical foods for memory loss or depression, in products such as CerefolinNAC and Deplin.

"Folates" are a mixture of different forms of the vitamin that occur naturally in food. Most supplements contain folic acid, a synthetic form of the vitamin. In the body, all of these forms are converted to L-methylfolate before entering the bloodstream and being stored by the body.

It is true that L-methylfolate is slightly better absorbed than folic acid. You'll hear claims that L-methylfolate is a better alternative than folic acid because many patients have reduced activity of an enzyme that metabolizes folic acid to L-methylfolate. But, so far there's no proof that this makes a clinical difference. Equivalent doses of folic acid and L-methylfolate raise folate levels in pregnant women equally well. There is also no proof that L-methylfolate is any better than folic acid for preventing neural tube defects.

Explain to patients that L-methylfolate is just as safe as folic acid for supplementation, but there is no reliable evidence that it's more efficacious. Keep in mind that doses in some products are very high. Deplin contains 7500 mcg and CerefolinNAC contains 5600 mcg. These amounts are much higher than the 1000 mcg/day that has been linked to a higher cancer risk in some patients.

Shawn and I are officially aunt and uncle of our ninth niece (well we have 8 nieces and 1 nephew now). Kaylee Rae Cory was born this morning at 6 am or so. She was 7 lbs 3 oz and 19 1/2 inches long. She has the cutest little chubby cheeks and is just adored by her older brother! We are so very excited that she is finally here!

The Weeks

Last week: Shawn was sick.

Last weekend: Gram and Mom came down to hang out with us. It was fun, we had a good time visiting with them and even got Grammy in on a game of Mexican Train. Then they spent hours at the fabric store and wanted to go again before they left! We put up a cool window thing in Amanda's window to help with the sunlight coming in...not sure how much it helped though...depends on where you stand.

This week: I am sick and my plant is dying. Shawn has two tests tomorrow that he is studying for! Tomorrow I am going to Cheyenne to meet/visit a nursing home patient and do a medication review on this patient.

This weekend: Get better. Catch up on homework. Attend baby shower (having babies is the thing to do around here). Visiting teaching (since its the beginning of the month and my partner is really on top of it)! Go partner! And of course...Hangout with Shawn!

Artichokes

Artichokes are thistles, part of the sunflower family. The vegetable is actually immature flower buds. They actually flower out the top...check out the picture on Wikipedia HERE. Quite pretty. Whoever knew? Anyway, the point of this post is that I found a recipe for artichokes in a magazine. It is really quite tasty. So I thought I would post it here.

Rustic Artichoke and Ricotta Pie
1 Tbl Olive Oil
1 small minced onion
2 minced garlic cloves
1 1/2 C Ricotta
1/3 C Chopped Fresh parsley
2 oz Chopped Prosciutto
1/4 C grated Parmesan
Salt, Pepper
1-lb frozen pizza dough
1 14 oz can of artichoke hearts - sliced and drained

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Line baking sheet with parchment. Saute onion and garlic in olive oil for 3 to 5 mins. Let cool. Mix Ricotta, parsley, prosciutto, Parmesan in a bowl. Stir in cooled onion and garlic. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Roll out thawed pizza dough into a 13 inch circle. Transfer to baking sheet. Spread filling evenly over dough, leaving a 2 inch border. Top with artichoke hearts. Fold uncovered border of dough over filling, letting dough pleat as you lift it and work your way around the pie. Dot artichokes and sides of dough with olive oil. Sprinkle with 1 Tbs parmesan on top of pie. Bake until golden and bubbly, 20 to 25 minutes.

A few tips from me:
If they make cans of artichoke hearts that are already sliced....buy those!
Proscuitto which looks kind of like bacon is not found in the bacon section....it is found in the deli section by meats such as salami.
If the Walmart worker does not even know what proscuitto is when you ask her...she is going to be no help at helping you find it...

One Week Down

School has officially begun once again. Shawn has 15 credits this semester and I have just 14 which will hopefully be a little bit of a lighter load than last semester. My classes this semester are Pharmacology II, Organizational/Societal Issues in Health Care, Medicinal Chemistry III, Intro to Therapeutics, and an Intermediate Pharmacy Practicum. For this class we get to travel to a nursing home in Cheyenne where we are assigned a patient that we get to speak with and report on. I am excited to be able to get out of the classroom and practice pharmacy that way. Jason and I ordered stethoscopes; mine is a lilac color and will have my name on it. So that is pretty cool, I am excited to get those in!
For FHE Shawn and I designed our dream home. It has a big wrap-around deck, circular staircase, library, pool, hot tub, sauna, tennis/basketball court, grand piano, theater, game room, plus a large kitchen, dining room, master suite, and a garage with a workshop for Shawn. So you better come visit cause we will have the ultimate party house.

Girls Night Plus

Last night Amanda and I had a girls night out while Shawn went to watch the football game with the Elders Quorum and Jason was working. We watched a teenage-girl movie that had some funny parts but was really a weird movie. It was a good time though.
Also, we had a huge stack of papers that piled up over the semester that needed to be filed but weren't because the filing cabinet was such a mess. So yesterday I got most of that redone and cleaned out before I ran out of file folders. Talk about a heachache! Nothing can give a headache quite like filing. At least it goes away once you stop though so maybe its just a mental thing.
It has been so cold here! Last night it was -20 but with the wind chill it was actually -40! Brrr....My poor neighbor doesn't have any heat and can't get an electric heater to not blow out the fuse so she has been sleeping at a friends house. Poor lady!
Other than that, just getting ready for school to start. Got stocked up on supplies, namely paper, printer inks of all colors, and pencils. Also, Shawn and I saw the bishop at the basketball game on Wednesday and are now assigned to speak on Sunday because he knew we were in town! Oops! I wonder....Do bishops ever feel like people avoid them??

Catching Up

So far we have not been bored at the start of this new year. On Sunday we were excited to see some of our neighbors at church. Shawn is their home teacher and they have been inactive for quite some time now. I hope that she was able to feel of the love and spirit that was present on that Sunday.
For Christmas Shawn and I got some racquetball supplies. We decided to go to the gym and try them out. It was fun! Shawn killed me in the first game, then I think he let me win the second game, although he denies it.
We had a great time over Christmas, we were able to see both of our families, play lots of games, and eat lots of junk food!
We also got a wheat grinder and a bread maker for Christmas, so I have been baking. I tried making jam in the bread maker. It turned to be tasty but very very sweet so I couldn't eat much. Might be good jam for waffles and ice cream?

School's Out

Okay so it may be a little late, but I am just so excited to be done with this semester that I can't help it. This has been quite a rough semester. Eighteen tests, 53 pages of papers, 4 projects, 6 labs, 16 blogs, and 10 quizzes later I am finally done! Hooray!
Shawn had a busy semester full of working and school. He is absolutely amazing getting a 4.0 again this semester! And somehow finding time to make dinners for me and read some fun books.What a guy! He is so great. I owe him some ice cream big time!
I spent all day on Wednesday cooking entertaining things. All of the recipes were a first for me and most of them turned out quite chocolatey and very rich. I made fudge, peppermint roll, puppy chow, cheesecake brownies (which turned out to be quite an intensive recipe), and ranch and taco flavors of chex mix. Then Shawn came home and made caramels which turned out to be quite delicious (these are probably my favorite out of all the recipes made). My chocolatey peppermint roll didn't really 'roll' so Dean named it volcano lava or something.
Shawn and I had the opportunity on Tuesday to attend the temple. That was a great experience and always puts life in perspective for me.
After the temple we decided to go to Outdoor World and got completely lost trying to find it because my map wasn't very detailed. After circling around it without even seeing it, we eventually saw it but we were up on an interstate and couldn't figure out how to get off! We eventually found it though and it is a pretty neat store. Shawn liked the aquarium and I liked the waterfall.
Yesterday we watched this cute 20 minute show from Disney called Prep and Landing. I strongly suggest going to hulu and watching it. It was pretty cute and perfect for Christmas time. Just go to hulu and search for it.

Shawn and I decided to be different this year and make a gingerbread village instead of a gingerbread house.

This proved to be quite a task because each house turned out the be the size of my palm, which made it very difficult to attach the candy.

I just feel like complaining so instead of complaining I decided to give things that I am grateful for.
I am grateful for a husband who loves me and supports me!
I am grateful I have the gospel in my life to bless me and help me through all my trials.
I am grateful to be in the pharmacy program.
I am grateful for the beautiful home I have to live in and the comfort that it is in my life.
I am grateful to live close enough to the bus stop so that it makes it easy to get around.
I am grateful that after so many problems our water heater and heater are both working, especially now that it is starting to get cold outside. I am also grateful that this allows me to take a nice warm relaxing shower.
I am grateful for the time I take off from school each day to be with Shawn. This is my favorite part of my day.

Food Storage Additions

Last week our water heater went out on us. There was water leaking into the bottom of the thing, so the pilot light would not stay lit. We fiddled with this for a few days. After not having water for a couple days, the dishes were starting to fill up, and the showers were quite cold. As I thought about the situation we were in, I realized that if we were ever in any sort of emergency where we didn't have access to water there would be a few items that may be essential. One is that drinking/cooking water would be necessary to have in storage. Another thing is that wet wipes or something to clean oneself might be useful, as well as paper plates/utensils because there would not be any extra water to clean these things with. (Don't worry I still did shower! These are just some things I was contemplating to have on hand for an emergency.) Anyway, just wanted to share my ideas.

This stretch limo suburban comes complete with 12 doors and a singing one antlered deer on the top. Only in Rock Springs can you find weirdness at this intensity level. The entire vehicle plus trailer on the back was full of junk...not even normal junk, like weird junk. And be sure to check out the writing on the car windows.

We were able to take a tour of the Flaming Gorge Dam, that was pretty fun. We even got to feed the fish at the bottom. The left picture is the view from the bottom of the dam. The thing sticking out in the middle of the dam is an elevator which we rode all the way to the bottom.

Maybe not struck by lightning but it was definitely close by. I had just taken that picture when we heard a zap. It sounded like a bug zapper zap. Shawn had been holding onto the fence and felt a buzz go through his hair like he had just gotten electrocuted. Come to find out everyone else on the other ledge had heard and felt the same thing. Not sure whose idea it was to be on one of the tallest points of Flaming Gorge standing out on a ledge during a lightning storm holding onto a metal fence. Although some blame Grammy for the close lightning strike because she happened to be on her cell phone at the time. We didn't hang around long after that, most of us went back to the truck.

Rotation 2

My second rotation was at a retail pharmacy. This pharmacy actually had a compounding pharmacy as well as a retail pharmacy and I was able to spend some time there. They also had a robotic filling machine which was kind of neat to work with. I also was able to see a part of the business side of owning an independent pharmacy which was interesting as well.

My first rotation this summer was at the hospital. Here are some things I was able to do while I was there.

I was able to take a visit to the surgery ward. I watched the procedures of endoscopy, colonoscopy, breast biopsy, and cholecystectomy (removal of a gallbladder).
I also had the opportunity to visit the radiology department of the hospital. Here I was able to see an MRI, a CT scan, a Barium swallow, and an ultrasound of the kidney.
On one of my final days on this rotation, I was able to shadow an osteopath. This is a doctor who focuses on healing the body as a whole and has had training on manipulating the body. It was interesting to see her point of view and be able to watch her perform a manipulation.
While I was on this rotation, I was able to be present during an inspection from the State Board of Pharmacy. I learned that they usually perform an inspection in every pharmacy once a year. I was able to learn what type of things they looked for, as well as what things were required to be present in a pharmacy.

Check out the tornado that landed in Goshen County WY last night. Shawn and I heard the tornado warning on the radio for Goshen County at about 4 pm and then later it started to get real windy so we checked the weather to make sure that we didn't have a tornado warning for here. Luckily, we didn't, at least as far as we know. However, we did find this video that happened just hours before!

Wilde Adventures

Last weekend for my birthday, we went to Cheyenne to do some shopping. After spending money on good stuff at Kohls we headed over to a shoe store. While in the shoe store it started raining, so we decided to head over to the mall before the rain got too thick. Once we got out to the car it began to hail and turned into dime-sized hail stones. Just my luck! We decided we didn't need any more evidence of hail damage on our car, so we drove around the mall trying to find somewhere for our car to hide. Eventually, we parked under a tree until the hail stopped. Since we were just outside Dillard's and it was still sprinkling, we went ahead and parked there because we found a pretty good parking spot. And FINALLY, on to the mall! Now, for some reason, this mall has always confused me, and I can't ever find my way around. I just have to remember what I saw when coming in the door, and then when it's time to leave I search for what I remember seeing. So this time I committed to memory a display of ties paired with various colors of shirts inside the Dillards. A great salesman at Tradehome helped me find a pair of shoes by putting them on for me as well as tying and lacing them up for me. This would have been fine except I was quite embarrassed by the fact that last week I got sunburned and my legs looked like I had some kind of rash and I happened to be wearing capris; not only that, with my capris I had decided to wear sandals because that's just what you do, so when we decided to go shoe shopping I had to use a pair of socks that had been worn before because that was all we had in the car. So here I was having some guy putting shoes on my smelly, dirty, rash-looking feet. I was extremely glad Shawn was with me. However, I did buy the pair of shoes and also a pair of orthodics. By this time the mall was begininning to close, and some of the shops were shutting down. We hurried back to Dillards to go back to the car. Once in Dillards, we wandered around the entire store looking for that display of ties and shirts. After not being able to find it, we decided to just go out a door and walk around outside until we found the car. It was still raining outside and we didn't see the car anywhere. In the back of my mind I thought maybe the ties display had been moved and someone stole our car. So we went back inside, by now the mall had only minutes before it was closing. We decided to ask someone where those silly ties were (because we didn't want to confess to losing our car!). We were informed that the ties were in the "Men's Store" and that this was the women's store. Now I would have thought that they would be connected....or at least labeled 'Dillards Women' or 'Dillards Men'. Not only were they not connected or labeled anything other than simply 'Dillards'....they were at completely opposite ends of the mall! So we booked it down to the other end of the mall, quickly found the ties display and ran out to the car. And I tell you, that is the last time I park outside of Dillards!

Are we done yet? School and Car Woes

This has been one intense semester. Two weeks left...are we gonna make it? Probably but it just seems like there has been so much stress lately. My semester has been filled with 1-2 tests per week. Crazy! And I have 5 finals during finals week and so that will probably be a pretty stressful week as well.

Also, they are trying to impound Shawn's car because it doesn't have current plates (because it isn't currently running) and it is parked on the street. Apparently, you can't have it parked on the street if it doesn't have current plates. I guess that makes sense. Which reminds me...is anyone free tomorrow to help us move it?

Kettle Bell Swinging

Haircut!

I decided it was time for a change and cut my hair. I donated my super long hair to locks for love, and they were hoping it would make probably 2 wigs. I also decided to color my hair and went just a touch darker, it looks pretty dark in this picture which was taken right after I got my haircut. It has since lightened up in color. I just love the easy fix of the shorter hair style and have been having lots of fun with it, although the bangs are hard to get used to.

Microwave Blues

Our poor microwave that was only a year old decided to gain a personality of its own. Sometimes it just would not microwave no matter what we did. So Amanda graciously gave us her 4 year old microwave that is still working perfectly fine. However, we are not the only ones around town having microwave problems. Apparently Dean and Justin wanted to see if their microwave was flammable so they used popcorn as their igniter. All in all they had to throw their microwave out, and it was a good thing Dean had some Scentsy on hand to cover up the smell. So they were microwaveless and opted to acquire a bread machine instead. (Yeah, didn't make sense to me either...) Anyway so until they spring for a new microwave we let them take ours. Maybe ours will like them better.

First Week of School

It is the end of the first week of school. It has been a pretty busy one around here.

Shawn is taking 17 credits this semester. His classes are: English, Geology, Information Systems, Business Ethics, and Statistics. He somehow managed to get all his classes on Mon, Wed, and Fri, which has seemed to work out really well so far. He is also still at Walmart in the OTC section as their number one shelf stocker. He should be pretty busy, but somehow is still finding time to read. He has caught up with me in the Twilight series, and is trying to read Eclipse before me!

I am taking 18 preassigned credits, which are: Self Care Therapeutics, Biopharmaceutics/Pharmacokinetics, Pathophysiology, Medicinal Chemistry, Intro to Pharmacy Practice, and Pharmacy Practicum. I really like the learning so far this semester because we are really starting to get into some fun stuff. All my chemistry, math, and physiology classes are combining in a way to where they actually make sense now. I really like Self Care Therapeutics because we are learning about OTC products (when to use them and what for, and when/what to refer to people).

We also went to the boys basketball game against San Diego. It was a great game. We got front row seats, a pizza, and two free t-shirts! The game was close the whole way, with a UW win in the end. It was pretty exciting.

Laramieite Unicyclers

So today I was walking along, minding my own business, when up beside me rode a kid on a unicycle. I wondered to myself why someone would ride a unicycle around campus, how exactly does he lock it up when he goes to class, if it was in fact faster than walking, and if it is harder to balance with a backpack on. Then I remembered seeing Pistol Pete at the last basketball game riding a unicyle through the gym and decided that this was too much unicycling for one week. So then I wondered if the kid I saw today was the mascot for Pistol Pete, or if Laramie is just a town of unicycling talent?

The other day Shawn decided that we had not had enough fruit for the day and decided to make us smoothies. The only fruit we had was blueberries and the smoothies turned out this bright purple color! I think it may have been because they were wild blueberries, but they were the most beautiful smoothies I have ever seen! So then the next day he decided he wanted us to get our fill of vegetables in and decided to add pure vegetable juice to the smoothie mix. I think he was trying to mimick the V8 Fusion...he put in a little more than he meant to and our blueberries had a slight tomato aftertaste!

Left Handed Smartness

I have recently learned in my physiology class that left handed people are smarter than right handed people! As this may not be any surprise to us left handed people out there, it needs to be made known to those right handers that there is scientific evidence on this stuff. Left handed people have a thicker corpus callosum, which is a bundle of neurons that connects the two hemispheres of the brain. Lefties have more neurons allowing more information to transfer between the hemispheres for better processing. The only problem is that the lefties have a harder time making decisions, because the information keeps going back and forth between the hemispheres and they can't make up their mind.
So to all the righties out there don't take this too personally, we still love you, just understand that we are right when we eventually make up our minds.
(And don't forget Albert Einstein was believed to be a leftie!)

You can log onto the school's website classifieds and find a couch for sale for a 12 pack of Sunshine Wheat (which is a type of beer for all us good mormon folk out there.)

I noticed today as I was looking for a table that there was a guy advertising his couch for the price of a 12 pack of Sunshine Wheat. Hm...so either the couch isn't very nice or this guy is desperate for some beer. Either way I am glad we are no longer in need of a couch!

Okay so we have decided to try this blogging thing. Not sure how well that will go but we thought it may be a good way to keep in touch with some of the fam. Well, Shawn has been busy doing homework all day. I should be, but I keep getting distracted with more entertaining things (such as this!) Somedays I feel like no one ever calls me....then today we get the internet going and I got more calls in one day than I have ever had before?!? Yeah, I can't explain it either. Well hopefully Shawn will be done with some homework rather soon, it is getting late. We have been trying an experiment to get to bed earlier and then waking up a bit earlier and seeing how we feel. Last week we did really good. This week isn't starting out as good, but at least there is still room for improvement. Well, I think that I am getting tired with all this talking about going to bed, so goodnight all (not that anyone is reading this)!
